Harlequin has announced it will discontinue publication of its Kiss Romance line as of November this year.


Poisoned Pen Press, long known for its mystery and suspense titles for adults, has launched Poisoned Pencil, to publish “the best in young adult mystery.” Publisher Robert Rosenwald is actively seeking submissions from both agented and unagented writers. He’s looking for “off-beat approaches young adults can feel connected to.”  Manuscripts should be between 45,000 and 85,000 words, with a protagonist between the ages of 13 and 18. Poisoned Pencil publishes books in both trade paper and e-formats. Be sure to check out their detailed submission guidelines here.


Recommended Reading, a free online magazine, is seeking short stories for upcoming issues. The editors will review stories from 2,000 to 10,000 words. They pay $300 for stories accepted for publication. Please read back issues of the magazine, available on their site, to get an idea of the types of stories they like. They are open to submissions only until June 1, 2014. For more details, see their guidelines here. 


Penumbra Magazine is seeking submissions for its September issue, on the theme of Alice in Wonderland. Editor Celina Summers is seeking stories that pay tribute to Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Stories may be up to 3,500 words. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2014. Payment is 5 cents a word. Check out the submission guidelines here.


Samhain Publishing is seeking submissions for a Childhood Fears anthology for Samhain Horror. Were you afraid of clowns? Dolls? Monsters under the bed? Explore these fears in a 25,000 to 30,000 word novella, for publication in 2015. Each novella will be released as a stand-alone ebook, and as part of the anthology collection. Protagonists may be adults or children, but if adults, they should be facing a fear that dates from childhood. Any time period is acceptable, with or without supernatural elements.
