In cased you missed it in the comments section of last week’s blog, I wanted to highlight an interesting article for Middle Grade writers. The Adventures of Dayton Barnes is an anthology that will tell the continuing story of a fictional boy, Dayton Barnes. Each chapter will be written by a different writer. The chapters are 1,500to 2,500 word stories. Submissions must be received by March 1, 2015. Pay is low ($5, plus a chance to make more by selling copies of the book) but it sounds like a fun and creative project. You can read all about Dayton Barnes’ world and the project details here.

Solstice Publishing imprint Winter Solstice is seeking New Adult manuscripts. New Adult stories feature protagonists ages 18 to 25, exploring the new freedoms and responsibilities of being an adult. Winter Solstice is interested in a variety of sub-genres of New Adult fiction, including mystery, paranormal, dystopian, and romance. Solstice is an independent publisher that has been around since 2008. Vinspire Publishing has been around since 2004 and publishes ebooks and trade paper editions. The editors are seeking submissions of the following types of romance manuscripts:

Historical, 70,000 to 95,000 words. The story must take place before 1950. They’re particularly interested in stories set around major world events, such as the end of World War I or Prohibition.

Amish Romance, 70,000 to 95,000 words. historical or contemporary.

Romantic Suspense, 50,000 to 70,000 words. Contemporary preferred, but the editors will consider other time periods.

Ethnic Romance, 50,000 to 95,000 words. Characters may be any ethnicity. Stories may be contemporary or historical, any sub-genre of romance.

We Need Diverse Books is sponsoring a short story contest for middle grade stories. The winner will be published in an anthology “Stories For All of Us”, from Crown Books For Young Readers in January 2017. In addition to publication in the anthology, alongside writers such as Matt de la Pena and Grace Lin, the winner of the contest will receive $1000. Stories may be up to 5,000 words long, suitable for readers ages 8 to 12,  The story should be written by a writer from a diverse background ” including but not limited to, LGBTQIA, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities currently marginalized in North America.”  Your story should include diverse characters, and must relate to the prompt “Once I began to read, I began to exist.” There is no fee to enter the contest.
